Bridport Kingpost Barn

26 X 42.5 feet | Circa 1850 | Bridport, Vermont

Kingpost barns are rare in New England. This one has an incredible five sided ridge beam, which is supported by a post at each gable end of the barn, as well as a third post in the center of the building. The rafters are primarily half round pine with beautiful patina. This frame comes with the original roof boards. The barn can have a full second floor, or it can be left with a partial cathedral ceiling. We will want to add a low post in the center bent to further support the ridge beam. The number of braces in this frame is phenomenal! We especially like the long braces that go from the king posts out into the ridge beam

Details:

  • 1,105 square feet of footprint with great potential for more space on the second floor

  • Sawn red oak posts and braces, pine rafters and ridge beam, and poplar top plates

  • Exceptional rafter system

  • Restored frame, erected on your foundation, with original roof boards installed

Possibilities:

This barn would make a wonderful maker space, home, or garage.

The ridge beam is hewn to match the pitch of the roof.

There is a tall knee wall in the second floor. Many braces and the hardwood posts make this possible structurally.

There are three king posts, including this one in the center of the barn. We love the long braces!

The king posts have long braces going up to the ridge beam to keep the rafter system square and true.
