Hand Hewn English Style Barn
30 X 40 feet | circa 1780 | Addison, Vermont
This barn is an incredible treasure! With even the braces hand-hewn, it is among the earliest that we have seen. The exterior posts are oak, and the interior horizontal girts measure 16 inches deep in the center! The frame boasts a full length ridge beam and 8 braces in the rafter system.
Details:
-
1200 square feet first floor
-
A partial or full loft could be added
-
Roughly 20 inch knee wall on second floor
-
Excellent condition in spite of its age!
Possibilities:
This amazing structure would make an incredible barn home! It can have a second floor added, and could have an addition to make space for a mudroom and bath, while leaving the spacious interior with an open floor plan. It could also be a terrific barn once again.

Hand Hewn English Style BarnThis frame has half round rafters that go into a beautiful ridge beam. There are 8 hand hewn oak braces in the rafter system alone! | Hand Hewn English Style BarnWe will be adding a vintage “queen system” similar to the one shown here. It picks up the rafter load at mid span and insures that the roof line will continue to remain straight and strong for it’s new life. Hand hewn timbers will be used. |
